An Overview of Common Transformers: Types, Functions and Practical Applications

2026-06-29

Electricity has become an indispensable foundation of modern society, powering industrial production, commercial operations, and daily human life. However, the electricity generated by power plants cannot be directly transmitted and used by end-users due to voltage mismatch and transmission loss issues. This is where transformers, the core equipment of power grid systems, play a decisive role. Among various transformer types, power transformer, dry-type transformeroil-immersed transformer, and distribution transformer are the most widely applied categories, supporting the stable operation of global power transmission and distribution networks. Understanding their working principles, classifications, and application scenarios is essential for grasping the operation logic of modern power systems.

A transformer is a static electrical device that relies on the principle of electromagnetic induction to convert AC voltage, change current levels, and isolate circuits without changing the power frequency. Its basic structure consists of an iron core, primary winding, secondary winding, and insulating components. When alternating current passes through the primary winding, a changing magnetic field is generated in the iron core, which induces alternating voltage in the secondary winding, realizing voltage step-up or step-down. All power transformers and distribution transformers follow this fundamental electromagnetic principle, and their performance differences mainly lie in structural design, insulating materials, and application environments.

Power transformers are the backbone of the entire power transmission system. They are high-capacity, high-voltage-level transformers specially used in power plants and high-voltage transmission substations. Unlike ordinary distribution equipment, power transformers usually operate at voltage levels of 110kV, 220kV, 330kV and above, undertaking the key task of stepping up electricity generated by power plants for long-distance transmission and stepping down high-voltage electricity for regional power distribution. Their rated capacity is extremely large, ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of kilovolt-amperes. Due to the high power and high voltage working environment, power transformers require extremely high stability, insulation performance, and heat dissipation efficiency. Most large power transformers adopt oil-immersed structures to ensure continuous and safe operation under high-load conditions for a long time.

Oil-immersed transformers are the most traditional and mainstream type of power transformer. They take insulating oil as the cooling and insulating medium, with the winding and iron core completely immersed in special transformer oil. The insulating oil can quickly absorb the heat generated by the transformer during operation and dissipate it through the external radiator, effectively solving the heat dissipation problem of high-power equipment. At the same time, transformer oil has excellent insulation performance, which can prevent high-voltage breakdown and electric leakage. Oil-immersed power transformers have the advantages of low cost, strong overload capacity, and long service life, so they are widely used in outdoor high-voltage substations, power plant outlet terminals, and long-distance transmission projects. However, they also have inherent shortcomings: the use of flammable insulating oil brings potential fire risks, and oil leakage may cause environmental pollution, limiting their application in densely populated and enclosed spaces.

To make up for the defects of oil-immersed transformers,dry-type transformers have become the preferred equipment for urban power distribution and indoor power supply in recent years. Different from oil-immersed transformers, dry-type transformers do not use any liquid insulating medium. They adopt air natural cooling or forced air cooling, and their windings are sealed with high-performance epoxy resin insulation materials. This structural design completely eliminates the risk of oil leakage and fire, making them safer and more environmentally friendly. Dry-type transformers are compact in size, light in weight, low in operation noise, and free of maintenance in daily use. Although their overall capacity and voltage level are lower than those of oil-immersed power transformers, they are perfectly suitable for indoor substations, commercial buildings, residential communities, hospitals, and industrial workshops. With the acceleration of urban grid upgrading, dry-type transformers have gradually become an indispensable core equipment of urban distribution networks.

Corresponding to high-voltage power transformers, distribution transformers are terminal power conversion equipment facing end users. They are mainly used to step down the medium voltage of 10kV, 11kV, 33kV to low voltage of 400V, realizing the final power supply for industrial and civil loads. Distribution transformers include both oil-immersed and dry-type models. Outdoor pole-mounted distribution transformers mostly use oil-immersed structures with low cost and convenient heat dissipation, while indoor box-type distribution stations generally adopt dry-type transformers with higher safety. As the link between the transmission network and end users, distribution transformers have the characteristics of wide distribution, large quantity, and frequent load changes, and their operational stability directly affects the power supply quality of users.

In conclusion, power transformers, oil-immersed transformers, dry-type transformers, and distribution transformers have their own unique positioning and advantages in the power system. High-capacity oil-immersed power transformers support long-distance and high-efficiency power transmission, safe and environmentally friendly dry-type transformers guarantee the reliable power supply of urban intensive scenarios, and various distribution transformers complete the terminal voltage conversion. With the continuous development of smart grids and new energy power generation technology, transformer manufacturing technology is also constantly iterating towards high efficiency, energy saving, environmental protection, and intelligence. These core power devices will continue to underpin the stable, safe, and green operation of the global power system.
