The most advanced worldwide overvoltage protection available today is the zinc oxide arrester. When compared to a traditional silicon carbide arrester, the arrester's volt-ampere characteristics and overvoltage current capacity are enhanced due to the adoption of zinc oxide resistance sheet as its core component. This results in significant modifications to the arrester's characteristics.
When the arrester is under normal operating voltage, the current flowing through the arrester is only microampere. When subjected to overvoltage, due to the nonlinearity of the zinc oxide resistor, the current flowing through the arrester instantly reaches thousands of amperes. The arrester is in the conducting state, release overvoltage energy, thus effectively limiting the damage of overvoltage to power transmission and transformation equipment.

This special feature of gapless arresters originating from non-linear characteristics of metal-oxide varistors between voltage and current scales. The non-linear feature is much higher compared to silicon carbide surge arresters.
