After the cable is laid, in order to make it a continuous line, the segments must be connected as a whole. These connection points are called cable lugs. The cable lugs in the middle of a cable line are called intermediate joints, and the cable lugs at both ends of the line are called cable wire terminals. The cable connector is used to lock and fix the incoming and outgoing wires, and it is waterproof, dustproof and shockproof.

DIN compression cable lugs and tubular cable lugs are “everyday items” for qualified electricians - these variants are ultimately two useful cable shoes for copper conductors. Yet hardly anyone knows what the difference between these two types is. Here are the similarities and differences between the DIN compression cable lugs and tubular cable lugs.

The Similarities of DIN compression cable lugs and tubular cable lugs
Both versions consist of electrolyte copper which, in order to protect against oxidation, are usually tin-plated. Both types of cable lug are also available as bare versions. Labels near to the flange contain information about their origin and cross-section capabilities.

The Differences Between DIN compression cable lugs and tubular cable lugs
For compression cable lugs to DIN 46235, applications, dimensions and the designation are specified in normative terms. The standard permits, for example, the use of this cable lug for crimping one, several, fine and super-fine stranded copper conductors for Class 1, 2, 5 and 6 conductors according to VDE 0295. This cable lug can also be used to braid round cables from copper to DIN 46440. The most distinctive physical difference between this and the tubular cable lug lies in the crimp markings. These markings on the compression cable lug tube indicate the number and the width of the crimp. A distinction is drawn here between broad and narrow crimps. A number is also engraved onto the flange. This number is also located on the dies according to DIN 48083, Part 4, and makes it easier to correctly assign the crimping die.

Tubular cable lugs differ from DIN compression cable lugs mainly in terms of their dimensions - they are usually shorter. This saves copper and hence reduces the purchase costs. The disadvantage is that various models are required for the various conductor classes. This differs from manufacturer to manufacturer and it is therefore necessary to check which tubular cable lug is the right one for the conductor to be crimped.

Function of Cable Lugs
When the cable leaves the factory, both sections are sealed. When in use, the connection between the cable and the cable, and the connection between the cable and the device must be peeled off, which completely destroys the original tightness. Cable lugs not only play an electrical connection role, the other main function is to seal the cable connection to maintain the original insulation level, so that it can operate safely and reliably.

Basic Performance Requirements of Cable Lugs

1. Protection Performance Requirements
The outer insulation of the cable is reliably sealed to prevent water and dust from entering the electrical enclosure or the meter box.

2.Mechanical Performance Requirements
(1) Sufficient tightening force for cables.
(2) The thread must have sufficient strength so as not to be damaged under twice the tightening force.
(3) Impact resistance requirements.

3. Anticorrosive Performance Requirements
Resistance to salt spray and sulfide corrosion.

In the case of meeting the basic performance requirements of cable lugs, you can choose to use tubular cable lugs or DIN compression cable lugs according to their differences.
