Optical fiber uses the difference in the refractive index of the core and cladding materials to transmit light energy in the optical fiber, which has become a major revolution in the history of communications. Optical fiber cables are light in weight and small in size, and have been adopted by power systems to transmit dispatching telephones, telecontrol signals, relay protection, TV images and other information between substations and central dispatching stations. In order to improve the stability and reliability of the fiber optic cable, a structure in which the fiber optic cable is combined with the phase conductor of the transmission line, the overhead ground wire and the power cable is developed. Because the OPGW optical cable is wrapped with metal wires, the optical cable is more reliable, stable and firm. Because the overhead ground wire and the optical cable are combined into one, compared with the use of other optical cables, it not only shortens the construction period but also saves the construction cost. In addition, if the OPGW made of aluminum clad steel wire or aluminum alloy wire is used, it is equivalent to erecting a good conductor overhead ground wire, which can reduce the potential supply current of the transmission line, reduce the power frequency overvoltage, and improve the power line to the communication line. It has many benefits such as interference and dangerous effects. Because the optical fiber has the characteristics of anti-electromagnetic interference and light weight, it can be installed on the top of the transmission line tower without considering the optimal hanging position and electromagnetic corrosion. Therefore, OPGW has significant features such as high reliability, superior mechanical properties, and low cost. This technique is especially suitable and economical for new installations or replacement of existing ground wires.
There are three main types of common OPGW structures: aluminum tube type, aluminum frame type and (stainless) steel tube type.

All-dielectric self-supporting optical cable (ADSS) is metal-free, tension-resistant, self-supporting, high-insulation, non-inductive, thin in diameter, light, easy to construct and economical. It is a composite optical cable made by wrapping the optical fiber bundle around the central strength member and taking protective measures such as insulation, waterproofing, reinforcement and sheathing.
Features: All dielectric, no metal, non-conductive; small cable diameter, large tensile force ratio; low linear expansion coefficient, wide applicable temperature.
All-dielectric self-supporting ADSS (All Dielectric Self Supporting) optical cable, due to its unique structure, good insulation and high temperature resistance, and high tensile strength, provides a fast and economical transmission channel for power communication systems. Generally speaking, ADSS cable is cheaper than OPGW (Optical Composite Ground Wire) in many applications, and it is easier to install. It is advisable to use power lines or towers nearby to erect ADSS optical cables, and even the use of ADSS optical cables is necessary in some places. The main uses of ADSS cables are:
(1) It is used as the lead-in and lead-out optical cable of the OPGW system relay station. Based on its safety properties, the power isolation problem can be well solved when introducing and extracting the repeater station.
(2) Use it as the transmission cable of the optical fiber communication system in the high voltage (110kV-220kV) power network. Especially in many places, it is very convenient to use it when retrofitting old communication lines.
(3) Use it for optical fiber communication system in 6kV~35kV~180kV distribution network.
